Capcom Co., Ltd. is a Japanese video-game developer and publisher headquartered in Osaka. Its major series include Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, Mega Man, Devil May Cry, Ace Attorney and Dragon's Dogma.

The name Capcom comes from "Capsule Computer". Capcom's investor material says the company was founded in 1983 as video games moved from a niche market into a wider entertainment medium.

History

Capcom's roots are in Japanese arcade and electronic game machines. Capcom Co., Ltd. was established in 1983, and the company later built a major international presence through arcade games, console games and franchise licensing.

Its early arcade output helped establish the company, while later console releases made several of its series globally recognisable.

Major Series

Street Fighter is one of Capcom's most important fighting-game series. Street Fighter II was especially important in popularising competitive one-on-one fighting games in arcades and on home systems.

Resident Evil became one of the defining survival-horror series. Monster Hunter became one of Capcom's strongest modern franchises, especially through co-operative action role-playing games.

Other long-running Capcom series include Mega Man, Devil May Cry, Ace Attorney, Dead Rising and Dragon's Dogma.

Technology and Development

Capcom has used several internal technologies across its history. More recent major titles use the RE Engine, which was first associated with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and later used across several Capcom franchises.

The company's development strategy often relies on long-running series, remakes and updated technology while still introducing new entries and spin-offs.

Public Role

Capcom is one of Japan's best-known game companies. Its characters and series appear in games, films, animation, merchandise, esports and crossover titles.

The company has had periods of uneven reception, but its major franchises remain important to horror, fighting games, action games and console gaming history.
