Rockstar North

Last revised by LocalRoot - 22 Jun 2026, 19:37

Rockstar North is a Scottish video-game developer based in Edinburgh. It is part of Rockstar Games and is best known for its work on the Grand Theft Auto series.

The studio was formerly known as DMA Design. Its earlier history is tied to Dundee's games industry and to titles such as Lemmings and the first Grand Theft Auto.

DMA Design

DMA Design was associated with early British computer-game development and became widely known through Lemmings, released in 1991. The studio later created the first Grand Theft Auto, released in 1997.

Companies House records show the company name DMA Design Limited before it became Rockstar Studios Limited and then Rockstar North Limited in 2002. The company later became Rockstar Games UK Limited.

Rockstar North

Rockstar North's own site describes it as a video-game developer based in Edinburgh, Scotland, and part of the Rockstar Games family since 1999. It lists Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt among its products.

The studio became central to Rockstar's modern identity through Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V.

Games

Rockstar North is most closely associated with open-world action games. The wider Rockstar studio system also involves collaboration between studios, so not every listed Rockstar title should be treated as solely developed by Rockstar North.

Important titles connected with the studio include:

  • Lemmings
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Grand Theft Auto III
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Grand Theft Auto IV
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Manhunt

Style and Reputation

The studio is known for large open-world games, urban satire, vehicle systems, mission design and dense environmental detail. Its work on Grand Theft Auto influenced how many later games handled open cities, radio stations, mission markers and sandbox play.

The same games have also brought controversy because of crime, violence, satire and mature themes. That controversy is part of the series' public history, but it should be separated from the studio's technical and design work.
